The human body is an underrated miracle. Every moment, it undergoes millions of chemical reactions to keep ourselves alive. Our lungs are constantly making sure we get enough oxygen, our heart is constantly making sure we get enough blood, our brains constantly calculating the exact mix needed to sustain activity, etc. The fact that all these tiny processes work on a large scale, and can reliably lead to a living, breathing, organism, is fantastic to think about. However, this is not magic at work. Through millions of years of evolution, life has found chemical ways to reliably sustain, and reproduce itself. From small building blocks, bigger blocks are created that are in turn used to create even bigger blocks. This series, “Life from Scratch”, will delve into how life works by focusing on each level of these blocks, and working up to a human body.
